L'Onomastica femminile nel ducato di Napoli: L'esempio di Maria [by Carolingian times, Maria was the most common name given Southern Italian women; this antedated by centuries the same development elsewhere in Italy; this is explained in part by the cult of the Virgin, especially in monastic circles; but a great impetus was given to the use of the name Maria by the spread of the cult of Saint Mary of Egypt; two lives of this reformed prostitute were in circulation in Italy in the Carolingian era, one translated from the Greek by Paul, a Neapolitan deacon].
